Nǐ hǎo!

Sometimes the vocabulary on the textbooks shows a very vague translation which easily makes the learners misunderstand and misuse. A typical example is “除了” which often has two translations “except” or “besides”. In English, these two words indicate different meanings. Then how can we tell the difference in Chinese when using “除了”?

“except” and “besides”

除了(Chúle)
When using “除了”, we often put “以外” after it to make a pattern. And“以外” can be omitted.
1. 除了……（以外）+ 都
Meaning: an exception; except
e.g.
⚫ 除了他的妈妈(以外), 谁都不喜欢他。(Chúle tā de māmā (yǐwài), shéi dōu bù
xǐhuān tā.)
No one likes him except his mother.
⚫ 除了啤酒（以外），他什么都不喜欢喝。(Chúle píjiǔ (yǐwài), tā shénme dōu bù xǐhuān
hē.)
He likes drinking nothing except beer.
2. 除了……（以外）+ 还/也
Meaning: besides, in addition to
e.g.
⚫ 除了英语（以外），我还会说汉语。(Chúle yīngyǔ (yǐwài), wǒ hái huì shuō hànyǔ.)
In addition to English (besides), I also speak Chinese.
⚫ 除了在银行工作，我也去学校当老师。(Chúle zài yínháng gōngzuò, wǒ yě qù
xuéxiào dāng lǎoshī.)
In addition to working in a bank, I also go to school as a teacher.
