26.1 Diabetes is NOT a lifelong disease
A 45-year-old friend of mine was diagnosed with diabetes by the hospital last week and began to accept insulin for treatment.
On his diabetes, he consulted his doctor in charge, and the following was their conversation:
My friend: “How do I get diabetes?”
Attending doctor: “The cause is unknown. There are many factors, such as heredity, diet and pancreas problems. Do your parents have diabetes?”
My friend: “No. What’s wrong with my pancreas?”
Attending doctor: “The pancreas is unable to secrete sufficient insulin.”
My friend: “I am taking insulin now, will I become dependent on insulin in the future?”
The attending doctor said, “It’s hard to say. The probability of insulin dependence is relatively high. Let’s control your blood sugar to normal level first.”
My friend: “What should I pay attention to when it comes to diet?”
Attending doctor: “Don’t eat sweets!”
My friend: “Can’t I eat any sweets from now on?”
The attending doctor said, “Yes, and you need to eat a light diet. You must strictly control your diet.”
My friend: “Can diabetes be cured?”
Attending doctor: “If you cooperate with our treatment plan, such as insulin shot, blood sugar can be controlled to normal levels.”
My friend: “What about stopping insulin shot?”
Attending doctor: “Usually blood sugar will rise again.”
My friend: “Can my diabetes finally be cured?”
The attending doctor said, “It’s hard to say, it could be a lifelong disease.”
My friend: “Lifelong illness? Does it mean I need to get insulin shot for a lifetime?”
The attending doctor said, “Unfortunately, yes.”
My friend was not satisfied with the answer from his attending doctor and, with a puzzled expression on his face, specifically consulted me.
Here is our conversation:
My friend: “Lee, I was diagnosed with diabetes by the hospital last week. I have been hospitalized and started to fully cooperate with the hospital for insulin shot treatment. I have several questions to ask.”
Me with surprise: “Really? Go ahead.”
My friend: “At present, is insulin shot to lower blood sugar harmful to the body? Will dependence develop in the later stage?”
Me: “Yes, it’s harmful to the body, and insulin dependency will be developed later on.”
My friend: “Why?”
