jīng yà 惊讶: 惊 radical is 心, which means heart. When you are surprised, your heart is beating fast. 讶 radical is 言, which means speak. Then right side is 牙，which means teeth. When you are astonished, you expose your teeth and has nothing to speak! So 惊讶 means surprise or surprised!
